Abstract:
This research examined whether the socioeconomic status of students’ parents can predict their academic attainment at secondary schools. Using a questionnaire survey on a sample of 303 students who were chosen randomly, the findings revealed that the following predictors are significant contributors to 27.5% (R square) of the explained variance in secondary school academic performance:

Parents’ education: the higher the education level of the students’ parents, the higher their academic attainment.
Parents’ occupation: the children of parents who are professional or administrative workers performed academically better compared with their counterparts whose parents are clerical or service workers.
Family size: the larger the size of the family, the lower the students’ academic performance.
